Do I Have to Wait for an SST Before My Child Gets an IEP Assessment?

If your child is struggling, the school might suggest going through a Student Study Team (SST) process first. While SSTs can help explore classroom strategies, they are not required before starting a special education evaluation.

Parents have the right to request an assessment for special education at any time. Once the school receives your written request, they must respond within 15 calendar days and complete the evaluation within 60 calendar days of your signed consent.

California law does encourage schools to use general education supports when appropriate, but the SST process cannot delay or replace a special education evaluation without your consent. The district may also conduct basic screenings, but these cannot be used to postpone an evaluation once you’ve asked for one.

If you’re concerned about delays, you can skip the SST and go straight to requesting an IEP assessment in writing.
